Happy Birthday Dad!

What so special about today? Of course, on this day 64 years ago a swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes descended on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. December 7th is, as FDR put it, "a day that will live in emphany." But December 7th will always be historically significant for another reason. On December 7, 1945, my father, Alex Graham, Jr., was born. So, here's to you dad! Happy 60th birthday!

December 7th and my big brother turned 60 !! What a milestone in all our lives. And how many different avenues Alex Jr. has traveled in his life! From skipping assembly at Dreher High by running out the door with a paper bag over his face, crossing the street and running in and out the doors of the neighborhood bank to escape pursuit from the football coach, to being "arrested" by a passing policeman who thought he was robbing the bank to doing his duty for the USA by serving a year in Viet Nam, to fianlly finding his Christ and walking the straight and narrow road of Life, I say "Happy Birthday" and proud to know you. Love, from your young sister Pam

AFTER 42 YEARS , THIS STORY IS STILL GOING AND GROWING. PLEASE ALLOW ME TO CLARIFY A FEW POINTS : WHEN WE (THERE WERE 3 OF US ) SLIPPED OUT OF THE MANDATORY ASSEMBLY AND DEFTLY AVOIDED THE PERSUIING FOOTBALL COACHES THANKS TO OUR CLEVER DISGUISES ,WE STROLLED TO AN AWAITING GET AWAY CAR WHICH WAS DRIVEN BY ONE OF OUR OWN ( the 4th BAGMAN). WE NEVER STEPPED FOOT IN A BANK BUT MADE THE TRAGIC MISTAKE OF CONTINUING TO WEAR OUR BAGS AS WE DROVE ARROUND THE NEIGHBORING AREA FULL OF CONFIDENCE AND LAUGHTER. EVENTUALLY WE CAUGHT THE EYE OF ONE OF COLUMBIA'S FINEST WHO WAS NOT PERSAUDED BY OUR INNOCENT STORY OF CUTTING THE ASSEMBLY PROGRAM AND SO DELIVERED US TO THE PRINCIPAL, MR WHITINGTON, WHO NEVER HAD A SENSE OF HUMOR. INSTEAD OF DISCIPLINING ME, HE DIRECTED ME ACROSS THE STREET TO DAD'S OFFICE SO THAT I COULD EXPLAIN FIRST HAND WHAT HAD OCCURED. I BELEIVE THAT DAY MORE THAN ANY OTHER CONVINCED DAD THAT THE CITADEL WOULD BE A GOOD FIT FOR ME. MR WHITFIELD REMAINED DOUR THE REST OF THE YEAR THOUGH I THINK I BROUGHT HIM A LITTLE JOY WHEN I GRADUATED.
PAM, YOU ARE RIGHT-I'VE BEEN DOWN A LOT OF ROADS, BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE ROAD TO TRUE PEACE AND JOY AND THAT IS THE ROAD CHRIST WOULD HAVE US WALK. I AM SO THANKFUL WITH HIS HELP TO BE ON HIS ROAD.
LOVE, YOUR BROTHER
